...WEDNESDAY JANUARY 26TH 1977
The Clash looking overjoyed at the prospects of a £25 quid wage packet!
The Clash thank Bernie for such a bad deal!
The Clash sign for CBS records (worldwide) today after
giving Polydor the runaround. Polydor records must be
feeling unloved with the
Pistols and now The Clash
slipping through their fingers.
Clash manager Bernie
Rhodes
, the arch rival of Malcolm McLaren and the only
other Punk manager who has come close to
McLaren's
wheeler dealings with the eager record companies, has only
gone and broke the bank as far as punk deals go. He's
secured a massive deal worth £100,000 for six albums. But
would CBS's promises of 'complete control' for the band be
acknowledged?...Only time will tell? Well that was the small
print, but what matters now is
Joe Strummer and the boys
can join
Rotten and co. on £25 quid a week wages from
now on. The first
Clash record is due in 8 weeks time.
However the record breaking signing wasn't seen by all as
big label commitment to the punk scene.
Mark P. of Sniffin
Glue
wasn't particularly enthralled....but he too knew where
his bread was buttered....
"I reckon we should stay independent
and forget about record companies that
had their glory in the swingin
sixties...except when they save SG7
from the graveyard by paying £60 for
their page ad" -
Mark P. (Sniffin Glue)
