| WENDY O' WILLIAMS THE PLASMATICS They don't make lumberjacks quite like Wendy 'O' Williams any more. Here she is back in November 16th 1979 taking a chainsaw to a guitar. Look at the concentration on her face as she bites her tongue while guiding the chains through yet another unlucky guitar victim. The Plasmatics were relatively unknown outside of their punk audience they soon began selling out CBGB's in '78 and were releasing records on their own label, but just like Crass the more they got known the more notoriety they gained. They were the first punk group in history to fill the NYC Palladium at full ticket prices and without a major label recording contract. Their shocking stage shows which included smashing up cars and TV's with sledgehammers with a porn aspect supplied by Wendy's extravagant behaviour drew the crowds. This shot was prior to the taped nipples, signing to Stiff Records, and the flambouyant mohawk with even more outlandish publicity stunts which involved tanks and aeroplanes. |
