JJ Burnel 1977 - by Pennie Smith (DC Collection)
Jean Jaques Burnel - The Stranglers
'Stud of the Year' was the headline in this NME
centrefold taken by Pennie Smith back in X-mas 1977
JJ Burnel is the tough, rough, looking stud in the dirty old
men band,
The Stanglers. He was more infamous for his
brutal journalistic beatings than for scoring girls, but he
had more than his fair share of Choosie Suzys over the
years. His bassplaying skills are second to none in the
punk scene and this punk was a black belt in karate too.
So any gobbing by the punks soon got sorted in their live
sets. Still playing bass to this day in
The Stranglers and
still the biggest crowd puller of the band when old
favourites like 'Something Better Change' and '5 minutes'
are aired he continues to display an air of menace

"At the end of 1977, I allowed myself to be a centrespread for NME but no one ever
told me they were going to put 'Stud Of The Year'. I was taking the piss out myself;
when you're a 24-year-old bloke you want to get laid, you wanted to be treated as a
sex object as much as other people. No one ever understands our jokes, maybe they
weren't funny.
