Don't Be A Dummy! |
This image ain't John Du Cann or Gary Numan but it's a good pic from Sounds September 15th 1979. 'Don't Be A Dummy' was originally a British TV advert Gary Numan (of the then Tubeway Army) recorded in late 78/early 79 for Lee Cooper Jeans which was screened in late 1979. It was done on the back of someone from the ad agency hearing the first Tubeway Army album. Gary only did the singing. The track only lasts about 20 seconds and can be found at the end of the Tubeway Army compilation CD. It is not listed as a seperate track and is actually tacked onto the end of Remember I Was Vapour (Live). After Gary became famous, the people behind the advert asked him if he would record a longer version to put out as a single. He refused although a single was put out complete with punk cover but with John Du Cann (hippy guru from Atomic Rooster) doing the singing this time. Surprising what you find on a Gary Numan trainspotting mission. The curious amongst us can hear Gary's version complete with peroxide punks. |
