CARNABY STREET
Diane (18) from Bromley, unemployed.

No-one'll give me a job with my hair. I was first a punk in '76. I used to go down The Roxy. I stopped being a punk a year ago, but I'm still into the music. I wear drain-pipes, studded belts an' all but that's not really dressing up the same as punks do. I had a higher Mohican than this for two years. People used to come up to me all the time asking for photos. Honest, it gets on your nerves after a while. I think punk's going to come back soon-there's lots of really good punk bands coming up now: Exploited, Discharge, Anti Pasti, Charge, UK Subs and Vice Squad. It'll be different than it was in '77 though. Those young kids in bondage gear make me sick. That was the past. The idea was cheap gear; we used to make our own clothes not buy them. I can't afford to buy records. Most of my clothes are from jumbles. I only shop for essential stuff. Punk doesn't mean social anarchy any more. It's only meaning now is the music. I go around with punks and skins. We hang around Leicester Square...until we get nicked.
