Night of Treason....
at The 100 Club,London.
23rd December 2012
A weekend of bands at this famous venue to celebrate The Clash legend Joe Strummer who
died aged only 50. Not many 'faces' here tho? Especially considering wot it was for, probably
only Rusty Egan and Gaye Advert made the effort. All these fuckers that say wot an influence
he was...blah blah blah, but they don't ever seem to support the cause, as 'Strummerville' is
only a charity!!
Its fuckin' boiling in the venue, even in the middle of December! And as its Central
London the added cost of £4.80 a pint for second rate lager, Carlsberg urrrrrggghhh!!
Despite all this a full house tonight as its a strong bill. Five of the seven acts were
around from the late 70's punk period. And the nice quick changeovers proved a success
as all the bands were using the same amps and drum kit. All the support bands played for
around 30 mins each, with the headliner Glen Matlock And the Philistines playing for
a full 70 minute set. Lots of people here I knew, which was great. And some of the bands
played a Clash track in their set.
Up first are Night Of Treason from down on the South Coast and their album
"Gentlemen And Hooligans" got lots of good reviews when it came out earlier in the year.
A great mix of punk/ska/pop with sing along street lyrics. Really good…….
Next up were The Duel who have a great female singer
giving 100%. They played tracks from their album...
'Soundtrack To The End Of The World (The Zak Splash
Story),’
Then were London who brought out their debut single in
1977. They were a bit third rate back in the day, but good
to see em still playing. “Everyones a Winner” and “Friday on
my Mind” sounded good tho.
Next up is Ed Tudor Pole who is still manic mad on stage,
with his pist lookin stares and mouth pouts!!
Very entertaining tho. His set ended
great with "Who Killed Bambi?" and
"Swords Of A Thousand Men".
Next was Spizz Energi with a full band.
They played some of their great old
tracks including "6000 Crazy","Soldier
Soldier" and "Where's Captain Kirk".
A good set. BUT “I Fought The Law”
sounded fuckin dreadful, Ha ha!!
TV Smith next with some acoustic gems
including "No Time To Be 21","Gary
Gilmore's Eyes", "Bored Teenagers"
and "One Chord Wonders". And a
festive piss take “Christmas Bloody
Christmas”.
A great night got even better
when Glen Matlock And The
Philistines hit the stage as
they played a quality mix from
Glens solo albums and a strong
selection from his previous
bands. Which song wise he has
quite a few!!!!....
Full setlist played was : "Born
Running","Timebomb","Hard
Work","Burning Sounds","God
Save The Queen", "Idiot",
"Ghosts Of Princes In Towers",
"Somewhere Somehow","Yeah
Right!","Steppin' Stone","White
Knuckle Ride","On Something",
"Rattle Your Cage", then a
great sing along to "Pretty
Vacant", with the front of stage
a riot of pogo-ing.
There was a nice touch for the encore as Glen said a few words about how close he and Joe Strummer were and wot a nice bloke he was, they then
played "Keys To Your Heart" which was by The 101'ers who were Strummer's band before The Clash. We then had a cover of "Santa Claus Is Coming To
Town". A Bit naff, but hey I fuckin love Christmas!!!.......
A real cracker of a set and the whole evening was a fitting tribute to a punk luminary…...
